There are definitely other sites, they work just like the Kindle lending Library. You can search p2p free eBooks. There are sites that you can share the eBooks that you have already purchased with others as well as download the books that they have.
Disclaimer: These sites are in violation of copyright laws. They are like the Napster version of eBooks. It's your decision to take part in them but it does mean that the author is not getting paid for your reading. On the other hand, they wouldn't be paid if your friend lent you their book either.
My general rule of thumb: Borrow or buy the eBook, read it, if I like it I buy the paperback to support the author.

If they are in violation of copyright laws would it not be better to steer clear of them?

I agree, we should try to stick to legal sites.

My friend mentioned the Kindle Lending Library as a great resource. Many local libraries use that site to checkout books from their databases.

Yes, but I understand you need Amazon Prime to use the Lending Library.

I use my public library to get books on my kindle all of the time! You can also lend/borrow books from friends right through the Amazon website. You just need to go to 'manage my kindle' and put in the email of the person you want to share the book with.

There's no public library in my country which lends ebooks. :( I have a sony PRS T2 and no nook or kindle. Do I still have a chance?

This is actually amazingly fun! I might try it out one of these days. I didn't know there were such sites, BUT I was aware of my public library offering such comfort. :) If I want, I can rent books from their Website or on Wi-Fi when I'm at the actual location - pretty great!
