This is the official review of the book "Achieve Your Dreams: Why you don’t and how you can" by Scott Hughes, which is available on Amazon. A. Lynn Powers has edited this book.
The objective of this non-fiction book is to motivate readers not to give up on their dreams. The book provides practical tips on pursuing one's dreams. It is a book for everyone. The introduction by Adam Buongiovanni along with his life example is a great value add. The statistics on failure, two-fold advice to the parents, the two reasons why people give up their dreams and the commandments to follow towards realizing one's dreams are all great content towards the objective of the book.
The author points out a novel being present in 80% of the people. He states that 95% of those people do not pursue their talent to become an author. The quotes mentioned throughout the book are worth mentioning. The opening quote “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation” by Henry David Thoreau inspires the readers not to lead a life of mediocrity and despair. Michael Jordan’s quote and the mention of his persistence in spite of his failures provide great motivation. The author, while emphasizing not to give up, also talks about J.K. Rowling's work getting rejected by a dozen publishers before getting recognized.
It would have been nice if the author had written about handling success. People may succeed in fulfilling their dreams but may fail in handling success. For example, one could achieve becoming a billionaire, but if they do not know how to manage their finances, they will lose that money faster than they gained it. So, it would have been worth a mention in this book about the wisdom to handle success.
The formatting of the book is awkward. A paragraph break is present after almost every other sentence which interrupts the reader's thought process thereby affecting the flow of reading.
To summarize, it is a good book for those who want to follow their dreams but feel like giving up. Since the book has a lot of useful tips and motivational content, I find this book okay and would tend to recommend it to others. But again, since the book is too short, formatting awkward, and writing style not so great, I won't strongly recommend it to others. I rate this book a 2 out of 4 stars.
