Just reading the review makes me even more grateful for a lot of things in my life. I can clearly imagine how actually reading the book would have the kind of powerful effect that you've described.

Great review for a great book. It had my attention from beginning to end. I love memoirs and John had an interesting life to say the least.

Thanks Angela. The best part of the book is the determination and resilience of the author. I was very moved by his story.

Great review and I am going to add it to my must read list. I have always slightly connected to story's of this kind. Have thought about going into social work because of the children that are put into these type of situations. Thank you for the review, it pulled at the heart strings.

Thanks. The author's story is very absorbing, due both to the subject matter and his wonderful writing style.

Excellent review! There's something to be said about a person's story that somehow weaves a dark, heartbreaking story with hope and a feeling of there being a light somewhere at the end of the tunnel. It definitely sounds like a book I'd love to read, one that captures you from the very first page, and keeps you reading to find out what happens!

Thanks Sullwyn39. This book was one of the best books I have read in the past year. The author's grit and determination to better himself through education against the odds was truly inspiring. I hope that, in some small way, my review helps to spread the word about this wonderful book.

Thanks for the positive feedback! Regardless of whether memoirs are your preferred genre, the writing is beyond excellent. While I was reading, there were many times that I paused to appreciate the author's wonderful phrasing.

Thank you! You hit the nail on the head - the mix of dark subject matter with the hope and determination toward a way out. It was very touching to read about the guardian angels that helped him in small and big ways throughout his childhood.
