A leading specialist on women’s hormonal health, Dr. Angela DeRosa brings to us a helpful survival guide based on the issues women face leading up to and during menopause. This non-fiction work entitled How Your Doctor is Slowly Killing You: A Woman’s Health Survival Guide, is for the sole purpose of informing women of common, yet misdiagnosed hormonal health issues, along with the benefits of what is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy.

Dr. Angela DeRosa introduces the main theme of women’s health by opening up about her own health issues she went through while still at a young age. Having experienced menopause at age 35, with symptoms starting in her mid-twenties, Dr. DeRosa dedicated her career to a women’s health program concentrating in hormonal deficiencies and treatment. Her determination as a doctor is to help women find and treat the source of their problems that other doctors may have diagnosed as only stress or depression, but that could be the results of a more underlying problem. She seeks to educate women about their own health and the tools available to help them.
“My personal and professional journey has proven time and again that women are getting bad information about hormones and hormone replacement therapy from their doctors, from the media and from the government, and it’s causing a health epidemic.”
Dr. DeRosa highlights the necessity for better treatments for women in order to achieve a healthier, happier life. Her concern is that there are medical advancements that can make this possible, but that are very hard for a woman to obtain.
“Unfortunately, when it comes to women and their health and reproductive issues, misinformation, and misogyny continue to be dominant forces, along with political or religion fueled madness.”
Here we are introduced to bio-identical replacement therapy. A tool Dr. DeRosa specializes in and with which she has successfully treated many women suffering from hormonal deficiencies and the impacts these have had on their lives. She explains the pros and cons of the various hormonal treatments and argues against the general misinformation given about said therapies. Furthermore, a clarification is given as to the--
“health benefits that are derived from hormone replacement therapy; the long-term positive effects that can actually help keep patients healthier longer; and how in turn, these can help lower healthcare costs by preventing chronic diseases from developing in the first place.”
As a woman myself, I found this book to be very instructive and well written. Dr. DeRosa is very thorough in her explanations regarding her practice. We are given a detailed lesson on the importance of hormones and the health of not only our reproductive systems, like some might think, but our whole bodies. While being an all inclusive lesson, it is simple enough for anyone to understand well and read through without difficulties. Her style of writing is such that the reader feels a sense of familiarity with the author, making this a lighter read than what you would expect from a book relating to medical issues.

What I also found to be of importance is the attention given to bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). We are given a comprehensive view on how such therapies work and the results achieved on different people by viewing several cases treated by Dr. DeRosa. I found these accounts to be very helpful in understanding how hormone deficiencies can be present in different people, what causes them, and how BHRT varies from person to person in order to resolve these matters.

What I greatly enjoyed about reading this books is how it is a very good guide for women to use in order to be more aware of their health. For example, the different types of treatment options there are in hormone therapy are explained. We are given simple pros and cons for each, as well as Dr. DeRosa’s preferred method. Moreover, the reader is given a checklist to help identifying deficiencies in estrogen, testosterone, and the clinical indicators of low thyroid. This is followed by important questions you should ask your doctor regarding your health and the tools available to help you.

How Your Doctor is Slowly Killing You: A Woman’s Health Survival Guide, is a great book to turn to, as a woman, in order to take more control over your health and be more knowledgeable about the common issues found in women’s lives. It not only presents the difficulties that hormonal imbalances and their misdiagnosis bring, but also the greatly beneficial side to hormone replacement therapy. I would definitely recommend this book, especially so, to women. For the above reasons, I give this book, 4 out of 4 stars.

reminds me of a documentary
"psychiatry - industry of death"
it is a great documentary that goes all the way back to when they use to do lobotomy's out of a van on the corner of th street
to how its all a profit scam now.

Excellent review. I am adding this to my reading list. The content of the book is well laid out. At first I was wondering if it was merely for post menopausal women, but as I read on I saw how it would be good for all women to look into. I know I have recently been wondering about health issues along similar lines, and I love checklists. So after reading:

"What I greatly enjoyed about reading this books is how it is a very good guide for women to use in order to be more aware of their health. "

I was hooked. I also have felt very skeptical of some doctors over the years, and my mother has also counselled me to become my own doctor by being more informed. I share some of tamara_mc41's sentiments about a lot of these industries being huge profit scams now .. where the intention does not lie in helping people get better, but in making them more money by falling to flashy promotional incentives.

Anyway, I am totally looking into this book. I see it as a good reference piece and starting point into understanding my health as I approach my future.
I love LOVE. <3

Thank you for your comments everyone! :)
I do believe this is a good book for women to look into. It has many topics about health care that might be of interest, plus it's a great book to use in order to understand your health more. I for one, went directly to my mother and recommended it to her. I know she has been having issues with her health recently and I really thought this book might help guide her. It definitely helped me understand a lot of things about my own health and I even learned important things to know along the way.

Does this doctor advocate the use of prescription drugs ( euphemistically called " meds ? " ) or is he more prone to getting to the " root source " of the problem rather than just addressing SYMPTOMS...

Two thousand years ago Hippocrates, stated: " Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food "....most doctors do not believe this simply because they only receive 4 HOURS of nutrition classes, and are therefore ill-educated...

Thanks for your review A.V.!...
The jury is still out for me re BHRT.........I need to do more research to see if this has any viability, or just another MONEY-MAKING FAD...

I first heard of it from actress/pitchwoman's Susan Sommers ( the thigh-master queen ),,,

Not saying she's " misinformed ", it's just that one has to be so prudent these days...

The body heals itself ( if we let it )...

Americans take better care of their cars than they do themselves w/ Fast Food diets, of high sodium processed foods, along w/TOO MUCH SUGAR, and empty calories of junky carbs, and not enough " food from the ground "

Whew! thanks for the vent!........not often that anyone reviews a " health " related book on here...........again, thanks...
