Empires of the Sea, by Roger Crowley. I recently read this nonfiction book, which is written so well that it reads like fiction, and I can't recommend it enough. It's about the war between Catholic Europe and the Ottoman Sultanate for control of the Meditteranean Sea and the Balkans during the 14th-16th centuries. A largely forgotten period of conflict, it has rather obvious ramifications for some of the conflicts of the present day.
