The Turn of the Screw by Henry James - very frightening and atmospheric.
Silas Marner by George Eliot - a very touching but not sentimental story about a miserable old man being redeemed by taking on the responsibility of bringing up a young child.

Reading drama is a great way to read the classics, but also stick to a smaller version. Some great ones include:

The Crucible by Arthur Miller
The Doll House by Henrik Ibsen
The Cherry Tree by Anton Chekhov
Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee
The Curious Savage by John Patrick

I'm not sure if this is considered a classic but it is pretty old : The Island of Doctor Moreau (it is really interesting, especially if you're into reading about secluded islands and breeding).

The Turn of The Screw is also another one. It was supposed to be scary but I personally don't see anything scary about it. Regardless, you might like it.

I think Lord of the Flies is also small although I can't really guarantee because I read it such a long time ago.

My personal favorite? Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, of course.

The Great Gatsby, Animal Farm, and Of Mice and Men are fairly short, especially Animal Farm.
