Journey to the West Translations

Post by Emperor Deathsaur »

Hey guys. I've been wanting to read Journey to the West (the Chinese novel) for a while now, and I'm looking for a good translation that is unabridged (which obviously rules out Arthur Waley's Monkey). I've whittled it down to two translations - W. J. F. Jenner's 2003 edition and Anthony C. Yu's 2012 revised edition. Which of these would be best? I'm not a Chinese speaker btw.

Jenner: Type in "Journey to the West (Chinese Classics, Classic Novel in 4 Volumes)" on Amazon

Yu Revised: Type in "The Journey to the West, Revised Edition, Volume 1" on Amazon

I own and have read the translation by Jenner, it's fantastic. Definitely the one you should go with. Comes in four volumes and is published by Foreign Language Press in Beijing. Best story ever.
