A couple of months ago I discover Val McDermid, and have loved everything I have read so far. Her style is sophisticated and the plot moves along quickly.

I've been reading Patricia Cornwall for years. I love her Kay Scarpetta series, and I'm about halfway through her latest, Dust.

Maud Fitch wrote:I've been churning through many crime writers from many countries and at the moment I'm reading the DS Logan McRae series by Stuart MacBride set in Aberdeen, Scotland. It's a cold, rain-filled, gritty city with gruesome murders, serial killers, a touch of romance and gallows humour from the long-suffering police. Definitely hard-hitting crime novels, well-written and not for the faint-hearted. I'd say MacBride has eclipsed Ian Rankin's inspector John Rebus.

I love MacBride too and discovered Simon Kernick at the same time and although you can't beat the Scottish banter obviously, Simon Kernick is awesomely exciting writer and worth trying if you like MacBride.

We have the same tastes! Have you tried Sue Grafton too? Kinsey Milhone is like a slightly darker version of Stephanie Plum

Janet Evanovich is one of my favorites... the books in the series have some similarities, but are always hilarious and suspenseful at the same times. I love them! (And they always want to make me eat desserts...lots of them!)

Though, noteworthy, these aren't serious crime novels. They're a little more laid back and humorous.

Lee Child. I love the whole modern 'knight errant' thing with Reacher. Proper old style fantasy fulfilment pulp where the main character travels from place to place (always broke but somehow with 'enough' cash) and just beats down any number of annoying baddies. And generally gets the girl.

I love to read Lisa Gardner. Her D.D. Warren series really keeps you
engaged. I wait very impatiently after one for the next to be published.
