Sue Grafton. The ABC Kinsey Milhone series just got better and better book by book.
James Lee Burke. Cannot sing his praises high enough.
Lindsey Davis. Crime fiction with a wry thread of humour woven into it. Just marvellous.

I could list a dozen but these are today's top three. Tomorrow's might be different.

My favorite crime and mystery author is Dan Brown. I usually don't read this genre too much but his books make even readers like interested. I also like how he brings humor into his work through the use of his main character, Robert Langdon. His works are also an educational read because I learned so much about different arts and buildings just from reading it.

Lawrence Sanders was an author I always enjoyed. Whenever I was headed on a trip, and happened to be at a used bookstore, I would try to grab a few of his novels for the ride/flight down and back.

I am also a Patricia Cornwell fan, love the Kay Scarpetta series. My very fav is Archer Mayor. His books are set all over VT and surrounding area but his book Bellows Falls is set in my hometown. His Joe Gunther series is FANTASTIC! Gotta watch those little, bucolic towns...they only seem sleepy... :-)
Archer Mayor is one of my favorite authors. I love reading his books where I can picture everywhere the protagonist travels.

My favorite is still Michael Connelly, gritty and dirty crime novels that are always gripping and fascinating to read.
