Corvette Nightfire's life was changed upside down the day he met Valentina. In the second installment of The Z Redemption Trilogy, Corvette Nightfire, by Daniel Wetta, brings the reader into the world of money laundering, cartels, taking risks, and falling in love. Set in western United States, Mexico, and Texas, readers will encounter themes of love, loyalty, bravery, and following one's beliefs.
Twenty-seven year old Corvette is a poker celebrity and is in Las Vegas prepping for The World Series of Poker. One night, he meets the beautiful Mexican, Valentina, while dancing at a club and is unable to stop thinking about her. However, shortly after meeting, his life suddenly is full of dangers when Valentina throws him a green bag during a casino shootout. He is left with a bag full of money and a world full of angry and dangerous cartel members. Will everyone he befriends make it out alive? Will he ever meet the mysterious Valentina again? Lastly, is there a connection between Corvette's hertiage and his current life situation?
Being the second installment of the series did not deter from my enjoyment of the book. After the first couple of chapters, I could feel the characters come to life and the plot beginning to truly unravel. The story is told in multiple character perspectives that is clearly labeled at the beginning of each chapter. Each chapter is also labeled with the its location and day. Especially towards the beginning of the book, I found this very helpful.
At times, I did feel there were repetitive scenes while I read. For instance, the connection between Corvette and Valentina begins with a dance. Even though the length in which this scene was described could have shortened, I was fine reading it through until I had to read it again, but in someone else's point of view. It was mentioned several times after, and I found that connection less appealing. Another repetive portion of the book was sometimes the author reverted back to a scene that had just occurred one chapter in the succeeding chapter with another character's point of view. I found this backtracking took away from some of the intense scenes. My heart would be racing when I get to the end of a chapter, wanting to find what is going to happen next, only to be met with the same scene with someone else telling what he/she witnessed, sometimes only moments beforehand.
Overall, I enjoyed most of this read and learning about the dangers that people face when dealing with the cartel. Even with a couple of graphic scenes and most questions spelled out for the reader, I give Corvette Nightfire a 3 out of 4 stars. Those who enjoy books in the C/T/M/H genre with a strong character learning to embrace his new lifestyle, and more importantly, his heritage, may find this read enjoyable.
