Jessica, the ex-girlfriend, thinks that Jake owes her for making her life miserable. They had been dating on again, off again for 5 years. She seemed to always be the one that ended the relationship in one way or another. Jessica feels that Jake is the bad guy because he left her at the altar many years ago. She is not completely without fault though. There are many reasons that Jake and Jessica should not be together, but neither one sees them.
Jake has commitment issues. He has been working on them, but cannot seem to come to terms with the consequences of his actions. He has had a few bad relationships in the past, to say the least. He does not like to open up on the emotional front, so this makes getting to know him better hard. Jake seems controlling, but this may be due his navy training (that he does not like talking about.) He is always trying to help Jessica with money and her emotional issues (which she thinks he caused.)
Now, Alice is a nice English lawyer, who seems to have her life together. She and Jake met at an art show in London and began a relationship. On their first date she gets pregnant, which throws a curve ball into both their lives. The longer she is with Jake the more she comes to on trust him completely. She does love him and even moves to the States to be with him, but for how long. Jake keeps lying to Alice about where he has been and with whom. She begins to get fed up and wants to move back to London, but does not want to hear all the “I told you so’s” from friends and family.
Overall this book is good. I would give it 3 out of 4. It grabs your attention at the beginning and then goes back and tells the story behind the beginning. I am not completely sure if it should be in the mystery/suspense genre, maybe more psychological thriller. I did notice a few grammar errors, but not enough to draw from the story. I believe that this will become a series of books, or at least have a sequel, which I am hoping to read.
