I would well recommend "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsson. There's nothing like is. I love it a lot. I've only read the first book and still looking for a chance to read the second book.

Wm. Kent Kreuger (Cork O'Connor series), C.J. Box (Joe Pickett series), Nelson DeMille John Corey series), Martin Cruz Smith (Arkady Renko series), Julie Kramer, Patricia Cornwell (Kay Scarpetta series), John Sanford (Virgil Flowers series)

They are not about Privet Investigators exactly, they are about reporters, rangers, game wardens, police officers, medical examiners, ect. They are all trying to solve murders and or mysteries.

This sounds interesting.I will have to check these series out I like patricia cornwell

I just recently watched the first half of the movie. The beginning is very slow but in the end i would say it will be good.Im also going to read the books i think they will be alot better.

One question about the Dave Robicheaux mysteries....which I really am enjoying...BUT.....did I miss one?
In one Bootsie is alive, he wons the fishing dock with Batist and then in the next book...Bootsie is dead and he sold the fishing dock to Batist and his house is burnt to the ground and I NEVER SAW IT COMING! i think in Jolie Blon's Bounce all is well and then Last car to Elysian Fields they are gone (but it could be another two books) I kept waiting to see what happened and it was only mentioned in passing as if I should have read it in another book. can anyone tell me what happend?

If you're into gritty down-to-earth realism I can recommend Ian Rankin and his Inspector Rebus series.

My favorite P.I. series is definitely Sue Grafton's alphabet series featuring Kinsey Millhone. I would highly recommend them.

Don Yarber has 4 PI novels starting with Bodies and Beaches. His protagonist, Kip Yardley, is a hard hitting; LA private eye, composite of Mike Hammer, Shell Scott, Travis McGee and Fletch. The second book, Corpses and Canyons, is set in the Phoenix, Flagstaff area of Arizona, the third, Death and Deep Waters, takes Kip to Palau searching for the remains of a WWII pilot, and the latest, Evil and Everglades, tells the story of a woman who wins $114 in the Florida lotto, only to be found dead on the beach. Yardley sifts through the 30 year old wreckage of a private plane to uncover the clues. The Miami and NY Mafia try to keep the lid on the secret, but Kip's persistent prying keeps the reader turning pages trying to find out what happened to the lotto ticket and who dun it.

This is more of a "new to me" PI series. The letter books by Sue Grafton. H is for homicide, P is for Peril etc.
