Completely agree! Even in the review we get a real sense of place and time and so many authors are unable to do that even half as well. Thanks for the very thorough and interesting review! :D

Thanks for the compliment! I do enjoy reading books with a real sense of place. I never heard of Texas Hill Country before, so it was an added bonus to learn a little about it.

I was wondering about this, too! I guess we will have to read the book to find out. This is a great review. I love getting a feel of a location when reading. I've been known to read travel guides just for that reason. I think location can really add to a story.

As an aside, I have a dog, and her name is Zelda!

Thanks Bookish_person and Lisalovecraft for the compliments!

Lisalovecraft - You will have to read the book to find out! 8) I really like books where the location comes alive in the story. In this case, the author lives in Texas Hill Country, so she is a "resident expert".

You will have to read the book to find out about the ghost dog. :) Actually, this is the second installment in the Alice MacDonald mystery series, but it's not essential to read the 1st book, Ghost Cave, before reading this one. It's interesting that so many of you are intrigued by the "ghost dog". I actually was a bit scared by the thought when browsing the available books. I guess I am a scaredy cat, no pun intended. :) However, I do like mysteries and the summary interested me enough to select this book.

I remember having to do book reports in elementary school, and it was always a requirement to explain, "Why is the book called XX," as part of the assignment. 8)
This just made me think of that for some reason. :)

The reason for a book's title is usually apparent early on in the story. In this case, there are subtle layers of the plot revealed as the story progresses, and it eventually becomes apparent.

I love it when it's like that! Or more subtle...

Sometimes a meaning of the title can be too subtle, where I will find myself wondering about it after I finish a book. Certainly, that's not the case here, but you will have to "peel the onion" before you discover the meaning.

All this chatting about this book, and now I am really itching to read Ghost Cave, the first installment in this series. I am stretched a bit thin reading-wise recently. I just finished Forever Twelve (BOTM), still reading my review selection, and starting to read All the Light We Cannot see (in-person Book Club). My in-person Book Club's meeting is this Saturday, so I'd better buckle down with that book!

Thanks for the compliment. I really liked this book, and was happy to find that it's part of a series. It's always nice to have additional books to look forward to with the same main character and interesting setting.

Thanks for the compliment. I like the word you chose, "colorful", to describe my review! The setting and townspeople in this book are certainly colorful.
