Wizards are a breed apart. They are alike but yet different. I have read a fair number of high fantasy and have found out that the wizards are the ones who know what will happen in the series even before any other charachter . Sometimes I feel that they are the authors themselves trying to bring the book back on track. Like Macros the Black in Riftwar Saga. he knows how everything will end, even when he is stripped of power he knows the end. Wizards are like magic, longevity,Precognitive, librarian, custodian, archivist all mixed into one package and due to the mix the things get crazy sometimes.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Ged (Wizard of Earthsea), the Wizard of Oz (duh!), or Dr Strange (comics totally count as books, right? Oh wait, I never specified it had to be literature).
Yeah
