The Last Human by Rocky Grede is the first book in a series of short novels that are based on a world where vampires rule the world and there are very few humans still in existence. In fact it is believed that Jake, the character that this book follows, is the last one. This fact makes Jake’s life more difficult, because one drop of his blood could make the rest of his town want to attack him.

The history of the world changed with all the use of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons that humans were using on each other. All these weapons eventually caused all the humans to die off and then the vampires took over and started to run the world. Some of these weapons also caused mutations that further advanced the change in the world.

At the age of five Jake was orphaned when a group of vampires came to his house and murdered his parents. One vampire, Lexus, different than the other vampires, decided to save and adopt Jake and raise him as his own. Lexus took all the correct measures to protect Jake from an attack from vampires. Jake goes to school and lives among the vampires in his city with little problem, as long as he has his guards. But this does not mean that one slip up cannot throw a wrench in to the system. One drop of Jake’s blood and an all-out war could be started.

Jake and Lexus’s city is not the only city of vampires in the world. There are two more to the north and south of their city. All the cities have an agreement of peace, but they do not necessarily like one another. Each city has a leader who rules the city, Lexus is the leader of his city. The other cities are greedy and always want more than they have. They are never satisfied with their level of goods or status.

In addition to these three cities there are two more regions that the vampires do not enter. The one to the east of
Jake’s city is all desert and no vampire that has entered this region has ever come back. It is believed that there may be a faction of humans that live in this region, but none have ever been seen. The fourth region is off limits to all vampires. Some of the mutants of all the chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons migrated to this fourth region. In this region there are creatures that would bring harm to vampires.

The fact that Jake may be the last human, that there is usually already tension between vampire cities, and that there are two regions that are unknown to the vampires makes the arrival of a stranger to the city a major threat. Many of the vampires in the city do not seem to pay much attention to the stranger, but Jake thinks that this is odd. He along with a couple of his friends want to get to the bottom of this mysterious person, even if it is against the wishes of Lexus.

Over all I have to give this book a 3 out of 4. It is was a very fast read, with it only being about 80 pages. I think that this is a refreshing take on the Vampire stories that have been written recently. Since it is a book written for children, it is also a great way to get a young audience into reading. I am interested in how the story will play out.

Yet another spin on vampires, but I love it. This definitely looks like a good book to get kids reading. Great review!
