The Road is a very good heart wrenching one, I forget who it was by. Of course there are the Hunger Games books. And Ender's Game is really good. It's not really post apocalyptic but it is set in the future and has a attention grabbing story line. Finally I would recommend the classic Fahrenheit 451, it is scary how close it is to becoming true.

I would hole up with these and expect a good dose of paranoia to follow:

The Stand -- Stephen King
Oryx & crake -- Margart Atwood
The Mote in God's Eye -- Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle
After London -- Richard Jefferies

I'm not entirely sure why, but no one has ever heard of the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness. I work at a bookstore and I suggest it all the time, but no one seems interested. It is really quite unfortunate since it is perhaps one of the best series I've ever read. Although, I wouldn't really consider it "post-apocalyptic." This is more like an entirely new world. Our world was passed saving, so the survivors boarded a ship to a new world. When they got there though, there was a species of creatures called the Spackle. They weren't keen to the idea of sharing their world. They set off an airborne virus that made all thoughts project outward. No matter where they went, the people couldn't get away from the noise of everyone else's thoughts. For whatever reason, this virus killed all of the women. To get more specific, the main character, Todd, is the last child in his town. Without understanding why, his parents (Ben and Cillian, friends of his real parents that died) tell him he has to leave his town and never come back. Finally persuaded to trust them, he leaves and uncovers secrets and people he isn't sure he really wants to know. It is a series of three books. The Knife of Never Letting Go, the Ask and the Answer, and Monsters of Men. One of the best series I've ever read. Highly recommended.

Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody.
It's set in a world post-nuclear war, with a bit of magic thrown in.

I also have to recommend "Life as we Knew it". My Girl Scout troop has formed a book club, the girl's are 8th graders and just finished it. It really provoked a lively discussion and the girls found it something they could relate to on a very personal level, much more so than "The Hunger Games".

For an more adult option, check out Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake" and "The Year of the Flood". Their story lines overlap but both are really great!

I've read both The Passage and The Twelve.....I think Justin Cronin is a great up and coming writer and anticipate seeing many more novels from him.

I actually just finished the entire series and am amazed at what a great book it is. It uses real events in history coupled with theories that have actually been talked about in real life to answer some of the universe's deepest and most popular questions. It deals with genetics, ethics, technology, and of course what story doesn't come with a little love tied in? Very, very good. I read about a book a week and in the last year i've read close to 300 and this has definitely become one of my top 5 favorites.

You are absolutely right! This has been a great read. This series is so relevant to current events, to the point that it makes me a bit nervous! I'm always looking for good reads, so please feel free to suggest others!

Recently got turned on to Steve (S.M.) Stirling's 'Change' series. Not your typical apocalypse books and excellent reading

Hugh Howey's Wool series is pretty awesome and impossible to put down.
I also like the Dan Wells Fragment series and Robopocalypse. Those are probably my top post apocalyptic favorites.
