Re: Fantasy books with weird worlds

I enjoyed reading Erin Hunter's Warrior book series.

I found the series showed its readers the impacts deforestation has on animals through a cat's point of view.

Often chapters change narratives, such as one chapter maybe through Firestar's perspective while a few other chapters maybe from his daughter's perspective. The story is told through different characters at different times showing each animal has their own view of their world, attitude, and opinion.

Cats are my favorite animal!

I recommend The Wings of Merlin and following books, by T.A. Barron. They are for slightly younger readers, but both the world and the story are unique, especially for the tale of Merlin, which has been told many times. The worlds are strange and wondrous and seem chaotic but often have some underlying order and beauty.

(I take slight issue with Discworld being written off as silly...Although it undoubtedly is, Terry Pratchett has some really profound stuff to say and his books have more to them than immediately meets the eye. I love lTerry Pratchett.)

These are also for young adult readers but I really enjoyed the world building in Brandon Mull's Fablehaven books. He has also started several new series that look promising.

Hmm you might be interested in Simon Green's Nightside series. It's set in this netherworld linked to normal London where "it's always 3am...a place where dreams come true and nightmares come alive. Where one can buy anything, often at the price of your soul... or someone else's. Where the music never stops and the fun never ends". Incredible worldbuilding with a darkly humorous, pulp detective kind of feel.

Chalice by Robin McKinley has a phenomenally unique world. Her books have amazingly creative worlds, and almost all of her books take place in different worlds.

If you are looking for a good series of the fantasy genre with the exception of a strange world for sure I would have to say that The Lunar Chronicles by- Marissa Meyer is good. Also a good stand alone novel is The Other Side of The Island was a really interesting book. Now, if you like books with mini stories inside, Unicorns vs. Zombies by- Holly Black is a good book to make you really re-think the world of creative writing.
Good Reading,

Ephemera by Anne Bishop. They live in a land where people called Landscapers can literally shape and change the world around them with their thoughts, intentions, wishes, etc. Very unique and interesting!

The Magicians Trilogy by Lev Grossman. There are multiple worlds within this series. The world building is impressive, rich, and very unique.
