J.K. Rowling is my favorite, but Darynda Jones comes in at a close second.

Favorite Fantasy author..? I have two. First would have to go to Laurell K. Hamilton. I am in love with her Anita Blake series and her Princess Meredith series. The second goes to JRR Tolkien. The details, descriptions and the story lines are just fantastically written!

Mercedes Lackey and Robin McKinley. I love to reread their books, and I love them just as much now as I did as a child, which proves that they've stood the test of time.

I adore Tolkein and C.S. Lewis, and I can't wait to read Lewis' Space Trilogy and Tolkein's Unfinished Tales once I'm finished with Wheel of Time *random excitable arm motions*

I've also enjoyed Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson and Garth Nix, alongside a bunch of other fantasy writers whose names/books I can't remember. (Not that my judgment in this area is particularly reliable, given how indiscriminate I am with fantasy books :3)

Neil Gaiman is by far one of the most amazing writers i've ever read, as are Patrick Rothfuss, Jim Butcher, and Diana Galbadon (she's a mix of both history and fantasy, so a but different from the other three but still very very good

Right now it's Brandon Mull. His Fablehaven series or the Candy Shop series are my favorites of his.

I really enjoy books by Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse Series). The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks was also really good...but I have not ready any of his other books.

Lydia wrote:Those are all very good fantasy authors. My favorites are a bit too much on the kiddie side, I admit.

Let's see, Tolkien for sure. Then there are two others who follow his patterns - Christopher Paolini (Eragon) and Patricia McKillip (Riddlemaster Trilogy). Raymond E. Feist is also another favorite of mine, though his books are a bit too gory and violent sometimes. Of course, there are also Lewis with his Narnia books, Cornelia Funke (Inkeart), Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson), Philip Pullman (His Dark Materials) and Brandon Mull (Fablehaven). Oh, and Derek Landy - his Skulduggery Pleasant books are simply exquisite!
I never got to read Inkheart. The movie came out before I heard of the book and it REALLY turned me off the series, despite how hot I think BF is. How much better is the book than the movie?
Somewhere out there is a world we never knew existed.

Colors that should not be.
Lives never opened.
Eyes that never see.

And then the page is turned, a universe created.

We are gods.

Well my favorite fantasy author is my close adult friend that has not published any books yet but I am sure that they will be great!
Her name is Megan LaTorre and she is writing about a magical world :)

I must agree that my favorite Fantasy Author is Terry Goodkind. I own all of the books in the Sword of Truth Series and even one of the spin off series of the Richard and Kahlan books. Wizard's first rule is a gripping and exciting book. It introduces you to the main characters and gives you an opportunity to fall in love with the world Goodkind creates through his pen. As the series progresses you get an opportunity to truly see the depth of his creativity as an author. However one of the things I agree with but feel Goodkind of pushed a little too much through his characters was his belief system of how politics and individuals should act. I loved the fact that his characters acted as adults but sometimes felt as the series went on it became more of an underlying sermon. Most of the books are awesome I would recommend all of the books. One of my most favorite was Faith of the Fallen which I own in hardback. The pillars of creation might be a little offsetting because it does not have the same pace of the others but he regains his composure in the books that follow. As an author I would recommend any of his books including the ones that were prequels to the series such as The First Confessor.
