The Accursed House by Emily Gabriau

Post by anu_ »

While going through the short story section of this form, I remembered a story by French writer Emily Gabriau, 'The Accursed House. The story is an excellent satire on self centered society, It revolves around a young man, vincomte, who is generous enough to reduce the rent of his building, for the benefit of tenants, However, everyone misunderstands his emotions and he is branded as a smuggler and his property is declared haunted.

Despite a very simple theme, I found the story quite interesting and an excellent take on human mentality.

This seems like a story of a per son who is socially withdrawn. A person who sets his own world not because he hates people but because he respects his individuality.
