I've read 3 of the 4. I hate to confess it, but I've never read Catcher in the Rye. The others I read in high school so its been a while.

I have not read 1984 but the others are very good. In fact Steinbeck is probably my favorite writer. 'Tortilla Flat' is another of his lesser known masterpieces. I agree that when you are required to read these 'classics' in high school or middle school they are BOORING. But so much better when you reread as an adult. Thanks, I will put 1984 on my list.

The catcher in the rye is my all-time favorite book. It identifies with us for the sheer reason that we are all Holden. We are all looking for something that we might never find. And we are all tired of the phonies in the world

Back in January, I read Of Mice and Men for the first time and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In school, I some how managed to avoid Steinbeck, since I wrongly equated Steinbeck with the descriptors, boring and unnecessarily depressing. Although the book is very short and can be read in one sitting, Steinbeck does an excellent job of developing the characters and the story line. It was basically a very thought provoking novel, which is now one of my favorites.

As far as the other three books, they are all on my long long TBR list. Oh, if there were only thirty hours in a day!

I only read "The Cather in the Rye". It was our English Requirement. At first I really hated the novel. I was like "How could the teacher gave us a depressing book". Then I realize as I turn the pages, the character is like me. Having problem with teenage metamorphosis.

Then I started to like it

@ Ail ... My advice to you would be, keep it on the shelf & reread it in about 10 years. The more life experience you have the more 1984 resonates IMHO.
Well done on finishing at your age. :)
