Anybody read it?

I finished it a few days ago and... well I'm not sure what the point of it is. It's got great reviews but it seems pretty uneventful. I get the theme of it is about getting older and losing comfort in your environment and all that but.. is that it? This is the first H.S. Thompson novel I've read.
