for fantasy:
Wheel of Time is fantastic though sadly Robert Jordon died before he could write the last book.
For something newer but unfinished, I liked Acacia.
Also, the Dark Tower by Stephen King is actually more of a fantasy book series than anything, and in my opinion its many times better than his usual work.

The Harry Potter series is one of my favorites, especially the last one!

You need:

Cornelia Funke…Inkworld trilogy (also love her other books)
Philip Pullman…His Dark Materials series
Rick Riordan…Percy Jackson and the Olympians series
Eoin Colfer…The Supernaturalist (I also enjoyed Airman by this author)
Robert McCammon…Boy’s Life, Swan Song
Stephen King…The Eyes of the Dragon, The Talisman (w/ Peter Straub)
Neil Gaiman…The Graveyard Book
Dave Barry/Ridley Pearson…Peter and the Starcatchers series

I second the His Dark Materials series. I just finished The Subtle Knife. So good!

I'm also enjoying the Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. They're for kids, but so is Harry Potter.

I have a similar thread under this same section, entitled "Please help--missing Harry Potter," and I've gotten some excellent responses! Check it out!

Try the Eragon series by Christopher Paolini. I have not read Harry Potter, but I love fantasy books and ANYBODY who enjoys reading these types of books will become quickly sucked into the world of Alagaesia! The book is about a boy who finds a blue "stone." He quickly realizes that it is not a stone, but a dragon egg. The dragon hatches and it and the boy(Eragon) must defeat the evil king that knows no limits. The fate of the empire rests upon these two. The connection between Eragon and Saphira is one of the most amazing parts of this book to me. You definitely won't regret reading this book!:D

Robert Jordan's 'The Wheel of Time' is an excellent series. Currently the first 11 books are available with the last book, the 12th, being split into three volumes (the first two of those volumes are also available, with the final volume expected to be released later this year.) Even more amazing, is, unfortunately, Jordan passed away before he could finish the last book. He did however make copious notes from his deathbed and another writer has taken on the task to finish the series. I'm currently on the 2nd volume of the last book and this new author does an amazing job matching Jordan's style.

The author, Brandon Sanderson, who is currently finishing the Wheel of Time series, has many a great books of his own. Warbreaker and Elantris, incredible novels. Definitely worth a read. His Mistborn trilogy and his best book by far "The Way of Kings" are outstanding reads. The Way of Kings, fully capable already of being far better than any Wheel of Time book, which is really hard to believe, I know. I'm obsessed with the WoT series!

Also, Patrick Rothfuss has two books I would suggest everbody read are, "The Name of the Wind" and it's sequel, "The Wise Man's Fear." Amazing books. You should definitely give them a look. :)
