Hello everyone,
I recently read a great book by P.D. James called Children of Men which shows to such a tremendous extent the workings of a government the workings of power, in a way the mindset of Hitler is shown. The themes in this book are so well shown in a very simple manner that you get a great understanding of things that are occurring in our own society. The main foundation of this novel is shown in the example of the world becoming infertile the population drastically dwindling the existence of the human race coming to an end. The main location and where the main action we see through the eyes of the main character Dr. Theo takes place in England (the United Kingdom) and it has been 25 years that a recorded birth has been seen, the book does show very interestingly that through the civilized world we know of no birth but within tribes and non technological living there could still be many births taking place. As you go through this book you see that as the world and England specifically that all hope is being lost and control is becoming nonexistent that the cousin of Dr. Theo, Xan, makes his move and jumps into power making his presence known and promising change and security, things that citizens look for the safety of their way of living and freedom. The themes i mentioned earlier are immigration (sojourner), law enforcement (what to do with criminal activity), Quiteus (suicide) and with election. With these topics we have a group called the five fishes who are the revolutionists who want change and demand it. When it comes to Immigration (Sojourners) something that our country relies on, are treated so unfairly such as they are allowed to come into our country and we rely on them so much have to stay a certain time and not allowed to leave when they want to and when their time is up they must leave and return to their home country and the handling of criminals are solved with the making of a Penal Colony where the politics are non existent and the fate of these criminals are left in their hands their not important anyway when it comes to the societal norm even if a criminal is penitent. Their living space is rotten they have not much option for food and Darwinism is the pumping engine of this project and then comes the topic of the Quiteus where the hope of living and the continuing of life is over the elderly are deciding that suicide is a more comfortable option that their hope of a family name continuing is over. Xan and his council used to fine the family of those who committed suicide since trying to discover fertile sperm was so important but the elderly were not to be taken seriously and the idea to give the family a payment because of the suicide was decided upon. It became a ceremony where the elderly were dressed in style and were taken out on boats and tossed overboard chained to weights. Genetics is another big topic in this novel where the searching for fertile sperm was looked for only in healthy, intelligent, and no deformities the same was done when it came to searching for a fertile women. So you can see that the creating of a perfect race was the premise. The novel was excellent you must read it!!!
