Sideways by Rex Picket

Post by hockeyrules12 »

I just currently finished a great, entertaining read by Rex Picket who uniquely and quite eloquently combined the lives of two men with a barrage of wine info. "It's all about the grape" a quote you will encounter if you read this book, the book is called sideways by the way. Quite interestingly the term Dionysiac which envelops the whole theme in this book goes so slyly and seductively with the grape. The two main characters are Miles and Jack who decide to go on this adventure (you will get this picture of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas but withe wine) to engulf in delicious wine in the Santa Barbara County, and like i said you will be quite the oenophile without even drinking a glass of wine. The premise of this story is two friends who get into deep conversations pertaining to finding love, is there such a possibility that one can live within the bounds of marriage, and complete hedonistic primitive desires. It is quite comical how one friend tries to prevent the other who will be getting married the next week from wanting to get laid so bad. As the story unfolds you begin to see certain circumstances that begin to constrict the "player playing is game" especially the woman that tried to kill him because of being told lies so he could get a little loving, especially that he was getting married in a week. Miles the one who experienced the heartbreak of his life time (divorce) believes love is loss and that marriage is an insufficient institution and that it traps men from wanting to be men and that it only exists to maintain a family. You see later on in the book that some clues are giving that he may have cheated on his wife but you are kind of left to determine that yourself. He does come around again due to his over sexual companion who pushes him to sharpen his confidence and that things will get better, you need to get laid. Due to all the great wines and countless adventures this is a great read.
