Maintenance Tonight -- Site will be temporary offline

Post by Scott »

I am upgrading the server tonight which will require taking the website offline for a few hours, starting at 2 AM EST (July 26, 2016). It will likely also be offline a few hours before and after that.

The internal search will be unavailable for a day or two starting now.

Tried several times to add a new book to my bookshelves and keep receiving an error message. Is that related to the internal search being unavailable?

Thanks Scott for all of your hard work! One issue I have had since the update - all of the OBC emails are going to SPAM.

Just a quick follow up to let you know it did work after a few minutes.

I guess the glitch has been fixed as I am now receiving the emails (no longer in spam).

Not sure if it has been. The Book of the Day email went to my spam, but notifications about forum replies have gone to my inbox. They come from different addresses, so the issue might still be there.

Regarding email going into spam, I have little control over that. All senders of emails would say they aren't spammers, especially the spammers. So even if there was some email header that asked the sender whether the incoming message was spam or not, it would not be used by the email providers receiving it.

To get the email to not go in spam/junk, one needs to configure this on their email provider depending how their email provider's setting work. Usually it's simple as clicking a button that the message isn't spam.

In case you are curious, the reason the upgrade would cause you to have to check the junk folder suddenly is because the true sender of the email is different because the true sender is now the new server instead of the old server. As a human being, you just see a 'from' email address which hasn't changed, but that's meaningless for spam detection. The true sender is a bunch of numbers that identify the computer (i.e. the server) actually sending the message, and that computer can put anything as the 'from' email address the end user sees.

If there are any issues still remaining after the upgrade, let me know. :)
