I think an author should take his/her readers opinion into account.

For most of my experience of the 2 stories (because they really are 2 different stories at this point) I enjoyed the book's plots better than the show. Now that the 13th book has been out, I am really over both. The books have taken on an almost cheesy romance feel and the show is ridiculously short in the seasons and long in the wait.
Both the show and the books used to be a passion of mine, now they are beginning to annoy me. I think there is never going to be an ending. I guess if you can make money off of it than why stop?

And it is true the the book series is extremely different from the HBO series. So don't use that as your basis wether or not you are going to read the books.
