Gali recently reviewed a book by the same author, but I think that book has different characters and is not connected to this book.

As you mentioned, maybe there are ideas floating around in the author's brain. :)

I would like to give this book a read as I haven't read much novels revolving around sport. It was pleasure reading your review bookowlie.

Thanks Cee-Jay. The sport theme is not overwhelming in this book. Instead it's more of a backdrop in a coming-of-age story in a small town.

Thanks! It was the first time I've read a novel that was set in the late 1940's after the end of WWII. I enjoyed the little tidbits reflecting the period.

That's one of aspects that I like. WWII always has fascinated me and how people were/are effected by this time period ever since I read Number the Stars in elementary school. Maybe I'll give this one a go!

I like that there were details to convey the time period, but it didn't overwhelm the plot. Some authors spend too much time creating pages and pages of setting and time period description, and it can get draggy. That's certainly not the case here.

Oh, that's good! You're right, sometimes it can be a bit much. But I'm glad it's worked out well here! :)

It's funny when it's mentioned that one of the characters has a TV, as if it's a special, magical thing. We take so many things for granted in our lives today.

We really do! Even appreciating food. We have food at home, but if it's not good enough, I can easily choose any number of grocery stores/markets. If I don't want to cook, I can order takeout or go to a restaurant. I really try to stop and think about how lucky I am, and just give a little thanks for everything that I do have.

Very interesting review, bookowlie. Your comments will make a subsequence work for the author.

Thanks for the positive feedback. The characters were so realistically described that I wondered if they were based on the author's family.

Thanks for the kind words. It's a sweet coming-of-age story, especially the epilogue.
