Calico Joe by John Grisham

Post by mmandy38 »

This was a heartfelt novel about the love and strife of baseball. The main character is a young boy, Paul, who admired the game as well as Calico Joe, a young ball player who took the league by storm in his first year. Paul watched every game until the day where his MLB pitcher-of-a-dad did the unthinkable.

The family goes their separate ways and Paul is reunited with his baseball hero years later in a surprising and honorable way. I absolutely loved the way the book ended, and came to be on good terms with Paul's dad at the end (even though I hated him most of the book.)

Calico Joe deals with the struggles of alcoholism, abuse and hatred from the eyes of young Paul. It is a story that anyone can enjoy, regardless of their thoughts on baseball.
