The book seems to be quite complex - just my cup of tea. Fantastic review, Pasha.

Thank you! I would say the main character is complex, which makes for an interesting read.

I've just finished this book having chosen it after reading PashaRu excellent review - which I totally agree with.
I thought the juxtapositioning of the author's interraction with Moone and the "incident" (no spoilers) earlier in his career was deftly handled. I really thought the book was going somewhere entirely different & was quite surprised by the ending.
But as PashaRu says the real pleasure of this book is in the quality of the writing. I loved lines like "The door opened with the shriek of crypt like hinges ..." or "My weak resolve dissipated like steam off a teapot".
For me the discussion around new authors trying to find a publisher and the risk of the author's art "turning into a business without the artist noticing" and the party organised by Schmidt where he outlines "The System" and the amazing arrogance displayed when the author queries the entitlement of these people to decide "what the world will and will not read". "Why not us?" Schmidt asks "Who could possibly be better prepared than we to be the gatekeepers?". Indeed.
My rating is 3/4* - and thank you to PashaRu for directing me to this enjoyable read.

It's not really complicated, quite an easily read book honestly. You should go for it.

@Fran, thanks for your reply! Yes, the book is worth reading simply for the quality of the writing. Thanks for including a couple of examples; I had trouble picking just two or three to include in the review. The party you mentioned was quite enlightening - if, in fact, that's the way the publishing world works.

As far as the ending, I had no real expectations but didn't expect the ending that is presented. As I mentioned, it was a bit of a letdown, but after further consideration, I thought it was okay and not too disappointing.

I'm glad you liked the book!

Everyone could use a couple of kudos now and then, but I'm never sure how much is fair. Is it the standard 10%? 15%?

Depends on the city and time of day. Sometimes 20% is considered appropriate. Just don't give kudos on Taburao or Bairiki. It's considered an insult to a person's ancestors. On the father's side.

So there is this app we use a lot here in Japan for socializing, called Line. And there is a character on Line named Moon. So the title of this book makes me think of him. Here is what he looks like:
