2666 by Roberto Bolano

This book is a masterpiece. I don't say that lightly. The 900 pages took me a long time to read. I checked it out from the library and had to renew and recheck out several times before I was finished. It is broken into five parts so it was easy to spread out the reading of this book.

I served in the Peace Corps in the 1990s. Volunteers read everything we could get are hands and passed books from one volunteer to another. In the Peace Corps I read a book that someone wrote in the cover "Only someone serving in the Peace Corps has time to read this book". I think I could say the same about 2666. If you have the time, do it. It is a great read.

The five parts seem very disjointed. Part 4. The Part About the Crimes is actually hard to read. Several times I got lost and was no longer following the story. Twice while reading the book I read other people's reviews to remind myself why I was reading the book. Other times while reading the book I was lost in the story and loving every minute.

I will end by saying it is worth it. Part 5. The Part About Archimoldi delivers. I had several "Oh my God" moments while reading that part and I ended satisfied.

I have heard other good reviews on this book and plan to read it. Thanks for the recommendation.
