The beautiful novel will take readers on a journey through time and place, as Adriana Trigiani shares a story based upon her own family. The novel starts in the northern Alps of Italy in the early 1900's, where we are introduced to two young children, Ciro and Enza. Ciro and his brother are orphaned and being raised by the local nuns, who have a deep love and joy in raising the boys. Enza is the oldest of 5 siblings and carries much responsibility to help her parents care for their family. The children meet briefly during a fateful encounter, but soon are separated by the vast Atlantic when Ciro is sent to America. After tragic circumstances, Enza and her father also migrate to America, in order to help provide for their family back in Italy.

Ciro and Enza continue to cross paths as they are both living in New York, but they have very separate lives. Each of them are successful in their own careers; Ciro as a shoemaker and Enza as a costume designer. The depiction of the era in the book is phenomenal! The reader is easily transported to the time and the scenes take life off of the page. The author also shows how family is so important and sometimes, special people come into our lives and become family. Those people that stand with us in our trials, accept our faults, and are our constant support while we seek to find our own way.

With the entrance of two World Wars, time and space once again separate Enza and Ciro. Will they ever reunite? Will they get their "happily ever after?"

I love this story, as well as all the stories that Adriana Trigiani has written.

It is as if she weaves a magical spell on her reader and transports them on a journey along with the characters of the story.
t is a journey filled with love, hope and tears.
