Waiting for the Greys! is a novel that follows the crusade of a young man named Clarence Matussey against what he perceives to be a massive conspiracy by the government to conceal the existence of aliens (the Greys) and their frequent visits to Earth. I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. It is humorous light entertainment without much in the way of plot or detailed characterization.

Along with his friend, named Almost Doug, Clarence investigates all sorts of unexplained phenomena, but especially UFOs and the aliens who inhabit them. Together they maintain a website, called THE TOTAL TRUTH, to publicize their findings. The novel opens with Clarence having had himself chained upside down to the fence of a military installation, in an attempt to bring public attention and pressure to bear against the government’s wall of silence. He faces challenges in this opening episode, but his later discovery of what seem to be alien artifacts could change everything. The narration of this possibility, along with the personal interactions between the various characters, makes up the whole of the novel’s plot. The other major characters are Stan, a homeless man who hears voices in his head, Ruby, a Native American with a crush on Clarence, and the DarkMaster, a mysterious stranger who leaves abusive and demeaning posts on the website.

Waiting for the Greys! is entertaining. The characters are quirky, and the author skillfully relates their oddities and how those affect their lives and relationships. The novel never drags, and the writing is light-hearted and genuinely funny. The prose flows smoothly.

On the other hand, the novel lacks much substance. The characters are relatively flat and they do not change or grow. There is a plot, but it is a pretty light one, and little suspense or conflict is generated. Also, there are a few spelling or grammatical errors. This is more of an annoyance than a major fault, but it detracts from the novel’s polish.

I found this novel to be enjoyable, but it is not much more than that. Readers who enjoy nuanced and dynamic characterizations, who seek suspenseful plots which deeply involve their emotions, or who want novels to create complex and believable worlds, will not find them here. However, Waiting for the Greys! is fun to read and funny to read, and I would recommend it to anyone who is primarily looking for these qualities.
