Charlie is a young boy living in Tennessee with his grandfather Luke. He has a close group of friends; Carly, Dusty, Hoot and Wiz who accompany him (even if the thought of ghosts frighten them) to haunted sites around town. The story starts off throwing you right into the middle of a ghost hunt at the old Wilson mansion that’s known to be haunted. Charlie doesn’t need to see Lillie Rose to know he needs to find out who she is and what happened to her.
Lillie Rose is a little girl with a big heart she shows no fear in becoming friends with the kids or confronting those who try to frighten her. With the close group of friends’ belief in her she’s able help them in scary situations and work to help others like her. Lillie teaches the others the importance of forgiveness, as well as accepting the fate they have been dealt. For such a young child she shows patience and understanding well beyond her years.
About half way through the perspective shifts to Luke and his journey to help the kids find a way to bring peace to Lillie and whomever else may need it. It turns out he and a few other grownups have an interest in ghost hunting as well. It’s with their help the kids are able to piece together the mysteries surrounding the town. Luke helps reunite families and bring to light those who thought they were over looked.
I would have to give this story 3 out of 4 stars. I think any preteen would be pulled in by the action and work to find the answers. Lillie Rose will have no problem showing them the importance of accepting one another. There were a few punctuation errors, and missing details that did make it hard to decipher who was talking. I did really enjoy reading this story though; the banter between the kids helped the story come together. The story ended perfectly, anyone who reads this will be running for the next in the series.
