Joe and Anne thought they would be happy forever. Joe promised Anne the world when they got married but since then realizes that it is not so easy to keep that promise. Their Christmas seems bleak, but Anne is a woman of great faith. Joe turns to other means to deal with his perceived failure as a man, but Anne holds fast to her faith and believes in God to work things out. She plans a romantic evening with Joe to share some special news and attempt to re-kindle their love. Anne visits the QT and excitedly returns home after the clerk gives her some romantic suggestions. Joe spirals out of control when he returns from work and Anne makes a desperate decision. Only God knows if the marriage can withstand the pressure and in the end it turns out to be the small things that make a difference.
Ben owns Taylor’s Tavern, a dimly lit spot where patrons can enjoy a drink. Helen works for Ben serving drinks and he is very protective of her. She survived a tragic accident during the Christmas holidays a year prior, so the season holds no meaning for her in her state of wavering faith. Ben invites her to join him at his place to watch It’s A Wonderful Life, but she declines and invites him to her place instead. You see, Helen has a flaw that makes her feel ugly, and she believes that she can control the situation better at her place. She makes her way to the QT to buy necessities for the evening and returns home confident that all will go well. The clerk showed her something that would make her evening magical, but she cannot enjoy herself because of what Ben must surely see.
Ida is eighty years old and starting to forget things. Tom is her neighbor and frequently stops to spend time with Ida since no one seems to care if she lives or dies. Her son is nowhere to be found but she has faith that he will show up one day. Joe discovers that Ida’s electricity is off and though unemployed, he vows to help her somehow. With only had a few dollars in his pocket he eventually ends up at the QT and the clerk recommends something special for Ida. Tom has just enough money in his pocket to pay for it. After giving Ida the package Tom wakes up five days later in the hospital. He is beside himself with worry because surely Ida could not survive the cold. When he returns to Ida’s house some days later, he finds that miracles do still happen and that blessings come from the most unexpected places.
I loved this short work of 93 pages. It definitely restores faith in humanity and in God. Even if you are not the religious type, these stories of dedication, love, and innocence will move you. Miracles do happen, but sometimes we just cannot see them. The author made me believe that and I plan to recommend this book to my entire reading circle. Don’t miss this one! I rate it 3 out of 4 stars.
