Official Review: The Result Of Coercion by Kelly Smith

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Result Of Coercion" by Kelly Smith.]

The Result of Coercion by Kelly Smith is a mix of both fiction and non-fiction short stories. The topics range from infertility and domestic abuse to remembering a lost love. Kelly even shares her own story of her struggles with trying to start a family. The book is short but the stories are incredibly powerful.

This collection of short stores is so perfectly written. It completely draws you in and puts you in the mindset of these women. You can feel their sorrow and joy, their fear and pain. For those who have never had to deal with infertility issues, you are given a glimpse of what that life is like. Kelly including her personal story was touching. You know that she writes from experience and not just observation.

Mostly all of the stories have an emotional pull, some more than others. Two of them in particular, “Emancipated” and “The Color of Fear” are the heavy hitters in this collection. Emancipated tells the story of a woman dealing with infertility issues. You are taken through the daily injections, the feelings of jealousy and resentment when others succeed where you feel you have failed. Being torn between happiness and worry when it seems like a dream may be coming true.

The topic of domestic abuse is dealt with in The Color of Fear. This is a disturbing story about a marriage going from loving to deadly in the blink of an eye. The narrative in this story is frightening and disturbing. The levels of abuse and trauma that this woman had to deal with are stomach churning. When the man she loves just begins to destroy her and break her down bit by bit. What should she do when everyone has turned their back on her? Does she fight or does she just give up? Is she even given the choice?

I give The Result of Coercion 4 out of 4 stars. It is a terrific read in all its emotional glory. Kelly Smith did a great job with this piece and I would love to see what else she can create. I give her kudos for taking on these almost taboo topics, and handling them in the manner she did.
