I am interested in reading it, since it is such an essential part of the English canon apparently, but just about every person whose literary opinion I respect says it is one of the most boring books they've ever read and had to finish it as a chore.

Have you read it and did you like it?

It was one of those books you 'had' to read which is a guaranteed way to put me off. I was too young to appreciate it at the time, whereas now I understand the emotion in it. Even though Herman Melville wrote this book in 1851, the personalities of characters Ishmael and Captain Ahab can translate to today. To answer your question, I think it is a rather tedious read.

I really enjoyed it. However, I think an abridged version would be welcomed more so than as is. The story I love, but at times it is like an outdated text about whales - wordy as well.

I found it hard going for the first half. But then it picked up and I found it hard to put down nearer the end.
