I have found a copy and it is in the mail. May take a few weeks as it is coming from England . Not to worry, I love having something to look forward to.

Primrose,
I am all but positive (and I learned this only recently) that the edition that you are getting will also include The Duchess Of Bloomsburry Street, so you will in fact be getting two books. In Q's Legacy the publisher told Hanff that he wished they had not bundled the two books because they would have made more money selling them individually. Hanff replied that she was making 11 cents a book and it was costing her more than that in postage to respond to fan mail therefore she was losing money and two books would mean losing even MORE money *LOL* This was a typical tongue-in-cheek comment from Helene as I'm sure not everyone who read the book wrote her a fan letter, but I get the sense that she did not become wealthy by any stretch of the imagination even though the book became a best seller. I read somewhere (can't remember where) that, of her own volition, she shared the profits from the book with the family of Frank Dole.

G'day Fran, 5:12 AM my time, and I am preparing to go off to earn my daily bread. I stumble off to work VERY early and when I get there I curl into a favorite, and VERY comfortable guest's chair (have you ever noticed that they always reserve the "comfortable" chairs for the guests?) in the hall and READ (what else?). I've found that this allows me to miss the morning rat-race, rush hour traffic and further provides me with the knowledge that I have the entire building to myself - quiet, and "far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife". Hope you are getting along well with "Q" and that it lives up to my recommendation. I am sometimes reluctant to sing the praises of a book since all art does not resonate equally with all people ... but I am hoping you will enjoy it. I'm taking "Q" along with me to re-read my favorite passages as it must be returned to the library soon, and the very thought of this makes me want to SPIT !!! *LOL*

@ DATo, Oh I hope that will the case, I love a two for one special. On the subject of "Q" when I ordered 84 Charing cross road I noticed that both the Duchess and Q are available for sale very cheaply. You may be able to aquire your own copy and be a happy little vegemite ( as we say in my part of the world):)
I can't imagine leaving home so early to avoid the rat race, I leave at 8am, at work by 8.15 in peak hour traffic. Yes, it's a small town population 40,000.

I just finished 84 Charing Cross and I absolutely loved it. I will pull it out to read again and again when man's inhumanity to man gets too much for me. I don't usually care for books written in the form of letters but this book had me at the first one and kept me glued until the last. It's amazing how so few words can tell such a moving story.

Hello once again Geneen !!!

Actually reading the letters, as opposed to seeing the film, really does add a new dimension and effect to them I think. The movie was great but the letters "moved" too fast in the movie. Reading them gives one a much better sense of them as real letters. So glad you liked it.

I amabout 3/4 through the book(started it late yesterday) and just taking a quick break.
Picked up the recommendation from Fran and thoroughly enjoying the book, as with all good books I don't want it to end, it reminds us all of a time when people cared for and were polite to others, and most the time reading it I feel a pang of sadness within the book.....especially the later letters, but the humour more than makes up for the sadder parts and I have actually laughed out loud more than once, anyway, back to the remainder of the book now. Thanks again for the heads up on this one. :D

Hmm, after reading through this thread, Im very intrigued by this book and its premise and have found a copy on eBay and gone ahead and ordered it! I trust the judgement of the members of this forum and have been after different or unusual books the last few months so this sounds like just the ticket. I will let you know what I think when i have it finished, thanks for bringing it up, OP. :D

Noo! Actually, I have been after something different and unusual lately as I am in a bit of a reading lull at present so something off-kilter and not involving ethereal presences and rivers of blood might be what i need.
