The 11:05 Murders follows the day to day living of Detective Sergeant Denise Stewart, working under Detective Chief Inspector James Sheehan. Sergeant Stewart has assisted in the investigation and arrest of a member of the police force who was engaged in the exploitation of women and money laundering. She was subsequently promoted from a uniformed officer to a Detective and transferred from Lisburn Police Station. On duty her first night, she was called to a crime scene. The victim, a wealthy loans officer, had his throat slashed and his genitals stuffed into his mouth. With no fingerprints or DNA from the perpetrator, DCI Sheehan and his team set out to find the killer and the reason for this gruesome murder.

In investigating the murder, Sergeant Stewart is faced with the possibility of being stalked and a mysterious informant, whose main task is to ensure that she is seen in a good light and receive as much recognition as possible. Torn between believing her informant, finding out more about her stalker, adjusting to the new environment and solving a mysterious death, Sergeant Stewart is forced to talk to her new chief about her struggles. The following Tuesday, a second murder victim is found with the same method of killing. This has led to further investigation and association of the victims, their past, present and the possible suspects.

In understanding the pattern of the killer, how each victims are connected to an incident which happened twelve years prior, DCI Sheehan and his team plotted a brilliant plan in ensuring that the killer is caught. However, a third murder occurred at 11:05pm. This murder however, connected all the dots in DCI Sheehan’s mind, resulting in the capturing of the killer.

The 11:05 Murders is a mystery and thriller, which will have readers on edge. There are a lot of curveballs and illusions which makes the novel an interesting read. Brian O’Hare did a lovely job at building the suspense and plot of this novel to give readers pleasure in getting to know DCI Sheehan and his team. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good mystery and would give this novel 4 out of 4 stars.

The transition between chapters is written very smoothly, with small images at the beginning of each. This allows for readers to anticipate the general direction in which the chapter will take. The transition, the plot, the climax and different curve-balls within the novel makes this an interesting read, fit for any individual who enjoys a good mystery book. It is fit for any individual at reading age. This is as the novel is not written with too much gruesome detail to give one nightmares. Scenes are described just enough to allow for one’s imagination to fill in the blanks, thus creating the mood for involvement in each scene. Therefore, readers who like to read about how the blood gushes out, how the victim thrusts, how the blood smells and any other detail to make the novel gory may be a bit disappointed.

I certainly enjoyed understanding how DCI Sheehan’s mind works. The determination of his team and their kindness in ensuring that the only female amongst them was well protected is to be noted. The closeness of the team and the chivalry between them is something that all good team leaders wish to have. Mr. O’Hare describes each member in details to ensure that readers can easily follow the story and use their imaginations. DCI Sheehan is compared to Sherlock Holmes. This comparison is befitting as he analyses each details of the case different from each officer. He looks at the broader picture and how each clue is connected. As well as little tidbits said by other characters gave him insight into who the perpetrator is.
The novel explores the corruption of some police officers, teamwork, and the depths to which a stalker will go in ensuring that they obtain the attention of the person they stalks. It also highlights how complex a stalker can be and how the transference of attention can take place. There is a bit of romance in the novel. However, this does not overshadow the mystery and as such enhances the reading experience. Mr. O’Hare did a beautiful job with this novel and as such, I am looking forward to reading and enjoying more of his work.
