Randy Love …At Your Service by Shay Carter is the story of an attractive, self-absorbed young man trying to figure out his way through life. Randy Love, the youngest of three siblings, has never had to work hard at anything, including his love life. When Randy decides to strike out on his own, he realizes that adjusting to adult life may be harder than he anticipated. Can Randy come out of his selfish personality enough to have everything he wants?

I give this book 1 out of 4 stars. I had high hopes for this book but it quickly became apparent that this book was not edited well. The author changes from one character’s perspective to another character’s and back again in a matter of a couple of sentences. This leave the reader confused at times, wondering who is speaking. The author also changes ideas so fast it makes the reader’s head spin. In one paragraph the author would be speaking about a night out at the bar and then putting in a “page break” begin a new paragraph that seems to start with an idea out of the blue with the main character listening to music at work.

One thing I liked about this book is that the author did a good job of capturing how adolescent men view the world and tend to be very self-centered. Randy is portrayed as having no empathy towards anyone and is always highly offended when someone points this out. He does not like hearing that he is not doing something correctly and can never understand why he always seems to have such bad luck in life, having to move from apartment to apartment and constantly ditching girls. This was about the only good thing in this book.

Along with numerous typing and grammatical errors, the way the author switched from different character perspectives willy-nilly makes for a somewhat difficult read. The author also decides halfway through the book to periodically act as a narrator and addresses the reader specifically, explaining different things directly to the reader. This leaves the reader confused as to whether the book is being narrated or whether the book is written from the perspective of the characters.

The ending of this book was a disappointment as well. Throughout the entire book, the reader is hoping that Randy Love will see the error of his ways and start to make changes in his life but throughout the entire book, including the last few paragraphs, Randy thinks only of himself. Despite being told by numerous other characters that his behavior is selfish, he just does not understand and never really gets it. There is a glimmer of hope right at the very end that maybe he wants to change his ways but the reader is left simply wondering because the book just ends. There is no closure for the reader that Randy has started to transform into a responsible adult.
