Achieve Your Dreams: Why You Don’t and How You Can by Scott Hughes
In this short book, author Scott Hughes focuses on the concept of reaching your dreams. He uses the example of writing a book to express to the reader his concepts. He brings the reader to the attention that the world suffers in quiet desperation and that there are several things that keep one from reaching their dream. He talks about how we as individuals go from striving and practicing to become great basketball players, for example, to working in a tiny cubicle. What causes us to change our mindset and give up those dreams we had as kids? That is one of the main things focused on in this short book, what changed our minds from this thinking.
This book is beautifully written. The author explains in the first of the book what he wishes for you to take away from reading his work. He then follows up his beliefs with information to help the reader understand his ideas as well as providing beautiful quotes to relate to each section. It is a very easy can-do book that gives the reader that boost of encouragement that we all need.
Things I really enjoyed about the book were how easy the author made it for the reader to understand his major points and also the variety of quotes he presented in the text. He kept the book easy to focus on and it flowed together very well. I had a difficult time finding something negative to say about this book. One thing that I did not like was that during the middle of the book I began to loose interest. It is almost as if the author prepared for this to happen because as soon as I moved into the last portion of the book, his writing helped me refocus on the message he was trying to portray.
Another thing that stood out to me was how depressing some of the quotes are. The author was able to counter them with affirmative statements bringing the reader back into a happier state of mind to continue on with his explanation of how that section would relate to the quote, though.
The audience this book focuses toward is very small. The author even expresses within his work that it isn’t for everyone. This book would pertain more to those who are either highly motivated to achieve their dreams or to those seeking new methods and changes in their lives. If you are looking for a short read that pulls you in and has an adventure this is not the book for you. I would recommend this book to others though giving it a 4 out of 4 stars for how well it is written, how informative it is, and also simply for the fact that I was able to enjoy it and apply it to my life.
