Em and the Big Hoom by Jerry Pinto is an excellent read. It is narrated by a son who is dealing with his mother's illness and trying his best to understand her schizophrenia while gaining insights into the woman that she was before and his parent's love story.

DEFINITELY, DEFINITELY Made You Up by Francesca Zappia. The main character is a girl who is unable to tell the difference between reality and imagination. The story was heartbreaking but beautiful.

To add a few more titles:

"Running With Scissors" by Augusten Burroughs (or almost anything he's written). Humorous memoir where he effectively raise by his mother's psychiatrist after his parents divorce.

"Diary of Harri Fox" by Sue Lloyd. A former BOTD, sometime is the past Harri experienced an "unspeakable event" and is now agoraphobic.

"Dawn's Eerie Light" by Roy Ziegler. A more recent BOTD, in my opinion the main character has an undiagnosed mental illness that leads to a severe depression and an obsession that defines the plot

One book that deals with mental illness in an offbeat way is a book that I'm reading right now- John Harwood's Asylum, a victorian novel about a woman who had checked into an asylum under one name, and claims she is someone else. It's worth checking out, if you like old asylum stories.

A lot of the Sidney Sheldon books like ''Tell me your dreams,'' ''Morning, noon and night'' talk about schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.

The only novels I read with the protagonist having a mental illness was The Yellow Wallpaper and The Nobel Prize. This is not to say, that I recommend or liked them. These are just the only two I read where the main character is mentally ill.

Wow, look at all the novels that include mental illness as a challenge for the antagonist! I appreciate all the suggestions and will look into a few of the titles mentioned. However I do have a question of my own, can anyone suggest any non-fiction books discussing the topic of mental illness? Many thanks in advance.

The Nobel Prize by Moist Bennarroch is a great psychological thriller through and through. Just that it needs some serious editorial work and minus the one mature scene it has and it is a worthwhile read on schizophrenic mc.
