I have that same problem. Every once in a while there will be that one book that they may share that will be interesting though.Meg0169 wrote: I wish it were that easy. My friends and I have been close since we were in elementary school, but we all share a completely different taste in books. Every time I do ask for a recommendation, they say things like "Fifty Shades of Grey" or Nicholas Sparks books. Those are great for some people, but I have no interest in those.
Oh, and great article Scott! I find books using a couple of those methods and reading referrals from authors within books.

What do they all have in common? They all talk about a society that controls the people and what used to look so perfect is going corrupt so i look for those kinds of books and that is also how I came upon reading acid which I am currently reading

I make decision on my to-read list based on friend's and Goodreads's recommendations, sometimes through the bestseller lists as well. But I'm currently quite selective on the genre of books that I read, perhaps I'll explore the books in other genres in the future.

I also find it totally acceptable to judge a book by its cover. If you're looking for mystery novels, then why force yourself to try the book that has fluffy unicorns and bunnies on the cover? Of course, there are always exceptions, but you should generally remember that the cover has been very carefully designed to illustrate what the book is about and is catered to target the demographic that the author is writing for. So if a cover doesn't interest you, then it says something about the book itself.
That being said, the cover shouldn't be a deciding factor in why you choose a book

I used to look for brightly colored, appealing book covers when I first started reading Adult Fiction, moving out of Young Adult Fiction.
