I love reading because it widens my knowledge and imagination. Second it is like taking a journey to a different destination while relaxing in my environment.

I think my answer will be similar to most already listed. To travel somewhere when you cannot escape from where you actually are. To escape reality or experience realities of others. To develop a sense of inner being by understanding people''s experiences in the case with non-fiction books. Or to improve myself in the case of self development books. Reading has helped me to love being alone something I always dread but now, I am contented with a good book instead of always seeking entertainment as a means of enjoying life.

I've been thinking about this lately. I'm currently in a city and work situation of which I am not a fan, but I love adventure books. Reading this genera really takes me away to new places and new people that are doing super exciting things.

This is like when someone at the hospital asks me why I want to specialise in oncology. I like it? It calls out to me? I really can't put it into anything tangible. I just learnt how to read and read books and then kept on reading and started running out of books, and that's how my home collection started. But why I like reading in itself - yep, no idea. My friends say I was reincarnated from a bibliophage and it's a fair way up in the DDx, because why not?

I like it because it's an activity that can be done just about anywhere. You can bring books along with you on trips and on trains going and to and from work everyday, and you've always got that second little world right there at your fingertips. And on that note, reading does delve you into a whole new world. It's a nice, quiet escape with rich characters, vast settings, and adventures to experience.

Reading helps me wind down at the end of the day. I can forget about all the stresses of the day and surround myself with a new world.

I have dyslexia and words were really difficult for me when I was young. By the time I got into 6th grade, I found a book that changed my world. When I was struggling with word's and reading, that one book and then a bunch of other books later, were no long my enemy, they became my friend's & escape. I was able to learn how to spell, read and grow my vocabulary just because one day I went into my school library. I found this book interesting and I decided to check it out, I wasn't sure if I could read it but I thought I would give it a go, after that first book I never stopped. Reading has changed my life, it still does to this day, like how I get to experience thousands of adventures, have imaginative experiences, go into other world's, other time era's, feel hope, sadness, love for the character's, love & adoration for the author, and the ability to continuously learn something new with every book I open and every page I turn.

I like and love reading. You can learn things in different aspect of life without experiencing any situation. It makes me fall inlove, even break my heart, make me cry, angry etc. but the biggest reason is escaping the reality.

For me, reading is a way to escape the world around you just for a little while you can have some quiet time, turn the lamp on, settle into a nice comfortable chair and open that amazing book and start your travel to where ever you would like to go, a castle, a forest glen, somewhere in the future or the past let your mind and imagination take flight. It can be a quest for knowledge or just plain fun you get to decide. I love to read, I love the smell of books, and the one thing that I dislike about my kindle is that missing smell.

I've been reading since I could learn to read at the age of six. My father was a great reader and this definitely rubbed off on me. As soon as I joined the library, fairy tales were my favourite source of reading material. It sent me into a different world with princesses, princes, the inevitable wicked witch, dragons, goblins, ogres and the like. I was writing great essays by the age of seven and I remember the look of astonishment on my grade 3 teacher's face as she read my work and promptly sent me off to another teacher so that she could also read my work. Needless to say, English was my favourite subject at school and I generally got A's for composition, language skills and poetry assessments.

My children are great readers as well and I feel that reading is one the most important tools needed in our society today. It is quite sad to see how empty the library is of children nowadays. They would rather prefer spending time on their cellphones and sending messages in abbreviated codes and using questionable spelling methods which drives me up the wall when adults do it as well.

Encourage your children to read. It's one of the best legacies you could leave behind. :D
