Re: Banning books

I thinking banning books is completely ridiculous. Reading a book is a choice, if you do not like the content then do not read it. Throw a parental advisory sticker on it with restrictions on age groups for purchasing just like they do with movies and music but don't ban the book. It's a form of expression, education, history, art, ect...There are much bigger issues in the world then a few paperbacks with controversial content.

I've always thought the practice of banning books ridiculous. It's not like television, or radio ads or even billboard signs. A book is something you physically have to go and find and sit down and start reading. No one is forcing you to pick up that book. Nor are you likely to accidentally hear the explicit contents. Of course, children and young adults, if determined enough, will get their hands on it, but that's no different than an R-rated movie. Personally, I ignore stories that I hear regarding a group, school, library or person banning a book. Attention only fuels their fire.

I don't agree with book banning. They are books. They are ideas and thoughts and history of all the things around us. Books have been used to create things to hurt other living beings and it is a part of what we have become. But truthfully the people that have hurt others will find another way to do it without the use of a book. Ideas used to be passed by word of mouth through stroy telling. Then written word helped keep the story more accurate. Now we have the computer and it will tell you anything from how to make waffles to how to create atom bombs. The written word will pass and banning it will not stop the ideas from being passed. I have friends that have been told by organizations what they can read. I think at some point you have to be able to distinguish that it is just a book. You have to take the good and the bad and decide to take the story or information for what its worth.

I do not agree with banning books but I do agree with watching what certain ages can obtain. I do not want my children to be able to obtain anything that we would not allow in our own home but that is something I pretty much put on the parents, for the most part. I also understand that there are certain groups with certain beliefs that will screen the materials inside their facility. Now with all that said I do not agree with governments stepping in, or big businesses stepping in and banning materials of any sort to sway the public opinion. Granted I also do not expect them to advertise this material but I believe that if you are of age and sound mind that you should be able to enjoy any materials. You may have to do some digging but you should always be capable of making yourself aware of life going on around you!

I never understood the reasons of banning books. People have right to publish their own ideas. Why stopping them?

The thought of banning books is nauseating to me. Books are my main source of information and if I were to find that that source was being censored, I would feel so betrayed! It's as bad as lying to the entire population and denying that things ever go wrong, even though we can all look out our windows and see the destruction. The whole thing makes me sick.

I don't think that books should ever be banned. Not too many years ago, a WVa school system banned two books by Pat Conroy because of excessive abuse that was shown in the books. That was absolutely ridiculous. Books are a reflection of all parts of society and should be allowed to exist for all people to read. If someone doesn't like what's in them, they don't have to read them!

Book banning is an atrocity that should never occur. I could warble on for ages about all the problems that it would cause throughout every facet of our society, or, I could just recommend you to read Fahrenheit 451. Which I most definitely do!

I was banned a number of times for writing the "wrong opinions." That's why I self-pub.

I can't stand banning books. My parents always looked at what would be banned at my school and encouraged me to read those books & I will do the same with my children (if it is age appropriate). I agree that books should NOT be banned & that parents should be in charge of making sure age appropriate books fall into the hands of their children.

I don't believe any type of book should be banned, if people don't like the books then they shouldn't read them.

Books should never be banned from society!!!! It is the oldest resource in which us and our ancestors have knowledge of this world. Without the books society would have no interest in todays technology as in we would had never develop an easier way to go paperless. Books are the key to the humans brain, it makes us have power in defending ourselves. It aslo helps us to learn from other point of views from worldwide authors in their books. Its a record of every human being fiction or non-fiction either way it wil help our future generation. Books are also consider a hobby to some of us. In which i personally have to have more than five books with me. Those who are thirsty for knowledge, books are great to find that curiousity of ours(:

Banning does not work. It makes the work more sought after.

To be honest I really don't know about the entire topic. Knowledge is the the greatest weapon a person can have and in wrong hands knowledge is very dangerous. Discussing of the smaller scale, i.e banning harry potter or on the larger scale, i.e the formula for making dynamite. In the right hands it can be a topic of wonder but in the wrong hands large scale destruction. Society depends on the fact that only few people have the knowledge to all and if we take all that out and give this knowledge to everyone the world order might collapse. But that is a bit too apocalyptic and far-fetched and I really hope nothing like that happens. If you ask me I would say that the right books should be given to the right people.
