FiveK wrote:The first book that made me cry was Bridge to Terabithia, which I read in the fifth grade. Most recently, My Sister's Keeper made me cry tears of fury. There have been so many others in between. Growing up I used to cry at the end of long books or series just because I'd knew I'd miss the characters.

What sets apart the books that make you cry? Affection for the characters? Style of writing? Are people who cry when they read books just more emotional?

I am the same way. Some books I get so emotionally involved I cry days after I have finished reading. My mom didn't understand why I would cry when reading. I had to stop reading at work during my lunch because I would come back to the office in tears.

I don't cry much in real life, but when it comes to books if it's sad, I will probably cry. One of my favorites is Petey by Ben Mikaelsen. I think I first read it when I was like nine. I still pull it out whenever I am in the mood for something heartfelt. There are tears every time.

I always cry at books, but the causes of my ugly sobbing are TFIOS, Me Before You and Allegiant.

Les Miserables. If you read it at a time when you're emotionally exhausted or even just literally exhausted, Hugo's power creeps under your tear ducts and opens the gaskets. I say to read the book when you're tired--it is in this state that your mind becomes less rational, more susceptive. Because I'm a reader who exercises quite a bit of conscious criticism when he reads, Hugo's sentimentality would jar against me if I'd been exercising those powers in a more wakeful state. But being even a little bit tired, with my defenses down, the book is overwhelming.

I'm not really a teary person at films, but put the book version in front of me and i'll be reduced into a bawling wreck. I always find that I become more attached to the characters in a book then I do on screen. This became apparent when I read the last song by Nicholas Sparks. I had to keep butting the book down and taking 5 minutes to calm myself down. Such a good book, but a real tear jerker.

Yes books have made me cry. When I read S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders many years ago I balled my eyes at the end. I also tear up recently at the end of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

I don't cry easily and only two books I can remember made me tear up, one was Silence by Natasha Preston and the other was Copper Sun by Sharon M. Draper.
