The author of the book wrote the story through his personal experience and to be honest, reading it requires a bit of a strong stomach.

The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman. It's the last book in His Dark Materials and I guess that I got so invested in the characters that what happened to them in the end just had me bawling.
