Nothing right now! Im in a kind of rut at the moment and my next book House of Leaves wont be here till next week and there was nothing on my shelf that caught my eye lately so if anyone has any decent recommendations for books (thriller, horror, mystery, even comedy etc) I shall give it a go, thanks people. :D

2. The Devotion of Suspect X by (author's name too long to remember...Japanese writer)
3. Audition by Ryu Murakami

I really enjoyed that book. It is my favorite by Hesse. I particularly liked the part where he has the epiphany at the river. I thought that was a powerfully written moment.

If you've read Hesse's novel Demian you will recognize a character in this book who closely approximates him but he is not the main character. The main character, much like David Copperfield, is someone who does things without carefully considering the consequences, and many years later the lives of several people are affected by his actions as a young man. The story deals a lot with Time and memory as well as cause and effect. It is hard to know if I should recommend it because I don't know what your tastes are in reading, but I am going to go out on a limb based upon your reading of Hesse and say that I think you will like it.

Wow! That was fast!

My preferences...

I like Thoreau and Emerson and Siddartha because they are 'spiritual' in a sense to me, and the books deal a lot with nature...(which is also part of the reason why I like Wuthering Heights)

I haven't read David Copperfield, but I hope it's not something soppy like Mitch Albom's 'Five People You Meet in Heaven' (sorry, I'm a bit off tangent here)...

I love Kazuo Ishiguro (except for his two most famous books 'Remains of the Day' and 'Never Let Me Go' ....I enjoyed all the rest)

Just curious..

What are some of your favourite books and what are you reading?

Have you ever tried reading Sophie Hannah? She's really good for a psychological thriller. Twists at every turn.

I don't like reading Mitch Albom's stuff at all. He doesn't have bad ideas for a story but he just doesn't know how to write in my opinion. I have friends who love his stuff and I respect that but to me his writing is a lot like sushi ... many people say it is very tasty, but I just don't like it.

I am currently reading Gaudy Night which was recommended by a coworker. It is, from what I can gather so far because I just started it, a crime / mystery novel. I am also reading The Spellman Files. I wrote a description of it in the Reviews and Discussions about Specific Books and Series section of the forum if you'd care to read it.

Copperfield is both mine and Dickens' favorite of all his books. Not sappy at all, generally speaking, but it does have a couple of sappy moments that I think work well within the context of the story. Very long book though, but for my money it's worth every page.
