- Latest Review: "Sugar Scars" by Travis Norwood
While I like Stacey Ballis' voice, and I did enjoy Off the Menu overall, I feel like the 3 books of hers I've read (also Good Enough to Eat and Out to Lunch) are a bit... formulaic. The emotions and thoughts of the heroines are often relatable but their situations and experiences typically are... not. (Guess that's what makes it fiction, though, eh? )
I found myself really liking both of the men in this story, even if they were both completely over-the-top in their own way so that they became more of a caricature of two types of men. What irked me the most was when the author tried to have certain characters speak with accents-- they didn't ring at all true, and I would have started a drinking game for every extra 'r' she added to the word "amor" (or any other word ending in 'r') to indicate a Spanish accent... but I would have blacked out and not been able to finish the book! (And the recipes are at the end, so I had to make it through!)
