There have been so many books in my youth that this is definitely a difficult task. There were two main books that I remember reading that truly kept me going as a young girl. One was "Hook a Fish, Catch a Mountain" by Jean Craighead George and the other was "Mary of Nazareth" by Esther Kellner. Both books helped me to feel that I could do anything. When you find yourself being locked away in your room for real or imagined infractions it helps to feel worthy of something positive that could happen or be happening in your life.

ReadandRoll[ wrote:Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck has always given me the bug for road trips. I also named my dog Charley.
Oh my gosh! I still giggle at the way Charley's teeth were described and the noise he would make. I loved reading about animals. So of course, I loved Jack London's "Call of the Wild," and the whole Black Stallion series by Walter Farley.

The Harry Potter series is what sparked the fire in my heart for reading so it will always hold a special place in my heart; however, The Great Santini by Pat Conroy is what made me grow up so it's hard for me to say just one.

I think, probably the Nancy Drew series had the most influence.

For some reason, when I was a kid, Chris D'Lacey's The Fire Within had a huge impact on me. It was after reading it that I really got interested in books, especially fantasy and science fiction.
