I also kind of like the way it looks when you have a very well used paperback, that has had multiple tape surgeries and spine glue-ons. The look of a book so well loved that you can't wait to find your own copy to see what is so fantastic about it! The kind that I can pass down to my daughter and tell her "look, mommy read this so much it fell apart." I believe that just as we take in what we read, the massive amount of time we spend with our hands and eyes and souls on the pages puts something of ourselves back into the book.
Languages never spoken.
Colors that should not be.
Lives never opened.
Eyes that never see.
And then the page is turned, a universe created.
We are gods.

I absolutely agree about the portability of a paperback. I prefer hardbacks for books that I want to keep, as they will hold up against time. With that said, I find the sleeves on hardbacks very annoying and always remove them while actively reading the book. I actually prefer the Advanced Reader Copies as they are pretty durable.

But I do love a well-thought of cover regardless
